Erkki Tuomioja, President of the Nordic Council for 2022

Erkki Tuomioja has been elected President of the Nordic Council for 2022.

Erkki Tuomioja was elected to the Finnish parliament in 1970 and has been a member of the Nordic Council since that same year, with a break for the time he was a minister. This is the second time he is President of the Nordic Council, the first being in 2008.

Tuomioja has been a minister in several governments, including as foreign minister from 2000 to 2007 and 2011 to 2015, and minister for trade and industry from 1999 to 2000. He was also vice-chair of the social democratic parliamentary group from 1991 to 1996 and its chair from 1996 to 1999.

Tuomioja has a Ph.D. in political science and holds a lectureship in political history in the University of Helsinki. He has written 18 books.

In the Nordic Council, Tuomioja is a member of the Social Democrat Group and a long-standing member of the Presidium. He is also chair of the Finnish delegation to the Nordic Council.
