Finnish and Ålandic Programme for the Presidency of the Nordic Council in 2026: Nordic Comprehensive Security
Ville Väyrynen and Kim Berg were formally elected as the President and Vice-President of the Nordic Council at its 2025 Session in Stockholm.
“The world has changed, and so the Nordic Region must bolster its own resilience. During our presidency, our goal is clear: to strengthen what unites us – trust, co-operation, and shared values. Together, we can face anything if we uphold strong connections between our peoples, nations, and values. This is the true strength of the Nordics. We are looking forward to the presidency.” says Ville Väyrynen, President of the Nordic Council and head of the Finnish delegation to the Nordic Council.
In a time characterised by geopolitical unrest, hybrid threats, and increasing societal vulnerability, the presidency and the presidency programme must strengthen the ability of the Nordics to prevent, deal with, and recover from crises. The programme emphasises closer Nordic co-operation on preparedness, defence, health security and security of supply, as well as critical infrastructure, mental resilience, democracy, and trust. The aim is for a more co-ordinated and robust Nordic Region, better equipped to deal with future challenges and crises.
Nordic comprehensive security is the title of the Finnish and Ålandic programme for the presidency of the Nordic Council in 2026. Finland took over the presidency of the Nordic Council on 1 January 2026, and the presidency programme has been jointly drawn up by the Finnish and Ålandic delegations to the Nordic Council. Representatives Ville Väyrynen and Kim Berg are the President and Vice-President of the Nordic Council during the presidency.
