The President of the Nordic Council, Heléne Björklund, made her opinion clear this week during her visit to the annual meeting of the West Nordic Council in Illulissat.

“I have been very much looking forward to this visit. Greenland is a magnificent country. I have spent my time here in Nuuk and Ilulissat meeting with Greenlandic stakeholders, mainly to get to know them personally and to listen. But also to make it clear the Nordic Council is keeping a close eye on events here and holds Greenland dear.”

It was the President's first visit to Greenland, and she also took part in the West Nordic Council’s 40th anniversary celebrations and paid tribute to four decades of close co-operation between the two councils.

The visit also included meetings in Ilulissat and Nuuk. The itinerary included a visit to a primary school in Ilulissat and a briefing by Arctic Command Commander Brian Jensen on the current security situation and future challenges.

The Nordic Council has repeatedly expressed its strong support for the people of Greenland and for their right to self-determination over their own country and future – an inviolable principle in international law. The Nordic Council would also like to see the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland play a greater role in Nordic co-operation.

The Arctic has become an increasingly important item on the Council’s agenda in recent years. In October, it will take part in the international Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík, working hand in hand with others, including the West Nordic Council.
