The green and digital transition requires closer cooperation across borders. The Nordic countries are now joining forces to use standards as practical tools to turn knowledge into solutions that work across the region – solutions that also could be standard-setting on a European and global level.

The initiative, The Nordic Region Sets the Standard, is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers and brings together the national standardization organizations in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The aim is to strengthen Nordic cooperation and make better use of standards as practical tools for innovation, sustainability and implementation of new solutions.

Standards are a powerful tool in societal development. They drive innovation and pave the way for new technologies, not least in the green transition. Closer Nordic cooperation will strengthen coordination and increase impact across the region.

Through the project, the Nordic standardization organizations will work together to:

  • strengthen the use of standards in areas that are strategically important for the Nordic region
  • support the integration of standardization in regulatory development and research, development and innovation
  • improve awareness of how standards can help businesses and public authorities implement new requirements and solutions
  • build Nordic competence and cooperation in future-oriented fields
  • create shared approaches that help reduce barriers and make it easier to develop and scale solutions across borders

The project focuses on key areas shaping the future, including circular economy, digitalization, and sustainable use of resources. Particular attention will be given to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and quantum technologies, as well as to developments in the minerals sector.

By strengthening cooperation and building shared approaches, the initiative will support more efficient implementation of new technologies, innovative solutions, stronger cross-border value chains and improved conditions for Nordic businesses and public authorities. The project will also contribute to strengthening competence and participation in standardization across the Nordic region, including among experts and young professionals in emerging fields.

By working more closely across the Nordic region, we can also increase the value and impact of standards and strengthen our role in shaping standards in Europe and globally.
