Housing allowance in Åland
In Åland, Kela is responsible for general housing allowance and housing allowance for pensioners. Housing allowance is intended to reduce housing costs for households and pensioners on low incomes. General housing allowance is granted to the household as a whole and is affected by the household’s total income. The Åland Labour Market and Student Service Authority (AMS) is responsible for housing allowance for students.

Amount of the general housing allowance in Åland
General housing allowance in Åland is calculated differently from mainland Finland. In Åland, general housing allowance amounts to 80% of the maximum or eligible housing costs after deduction of the basic excess; the basic excess is 42%. Housing allowance for students
General housing allowance from Kela is not granted to students from Åland who rent accommodation in Åland or on the Finnish mainland. However, Finnish students who rent accommodation in Åland can apply for housing supplement from Kela. More information is available on Kela’s webpage on housing supplement for students.
Housing allowance for students in and from Åland is included in Åland student financial aid and is awarded by the Åland Labour Market and Student Service Authority (AMS). Anyone who meets the criteria for a study grant or adult study grant can apply for the allowance. The housing allowance covers 80 per cent of housing costs, up to a maximum of €269 per month.
