How do we make it easier to transfer money, open bank accounts, and use mobile payment services across the Nordics? These were just some of the issues that were discussed when members of the Nordic Council, together with legislators, authorities, organisations and banks, gathered in Stockholm on 7 May for a Nordic hearing on cross-border payments.

Everyone involved in the discussions shared the common goal of creating a more cohesive Nordic digital payment system for the benefit of the region's residents and businesses. If we're to become the most integrated region in the world, it must also be easy to pay – no matter which Nordic country you're in.

Sweden's Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman participated in the talks, discussing a range of issues related to both technical solutions and the need for a common regulatory framework. Particular emphasis was placed on three areas – making it easier to make transfers between banks in different Nordic countries, simplifying the ability to open a bank account in another Nordic country, and enabling the seamless use of payment services such as Swish, Vipps, and MobilePay across borders.

The hearing is an important step towards improving the integration of finance in people's day-to-day lives in the Nordic Region, which is a prerequisite for the region's growth and mobility. The goal is clear – to facilitate a day-to-day life where it's as easy to manage your finances in another country as it is at home.
