The Nordic Region’s new role in NATO, support for Ukraine, ways of speeding up the green transition and young people's participation in democracy will be among the hot topics at the Session of the Nordic Council in Oslo from 30 October to 2 November. The Nordic Council prizes will be awarded at a ceremony in the Opera House on 31 October.

At the Session, the 87 members of the Nordic Council will discuss members’ proposals. The Nordic prime ministers will all attend a summit, and several other ministers will also be in attendance at the Session.

A safe, green and young Nordic Region

Reflecting the programme for the Norwegian Presidency of the Nordic Council this year, the theme for the Session is “A safe, green and young Nordic Region”. Topics discussed will include security, the Nordic Region’s new role in NATO, support for Ukraine, ways of speeding up the green transition and involving young people in democratic decision-making.

New reality for security policy

The security situation in the Nordic Region and the rest of the world has changed drastically in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. All the Nordic countries will probably be members of NATO soon, and the Nordic Council has discussed co-operation on defence and civil preparedness regularly during the year. The Session will include discussions about opportunities for closer co-operation and the best way to support Ukraine.

Progress is too slow on the green transition

The Nordic prime ministers’ Vision 2030 of the Nordic Region as the most sustainable and integrated region in the world is about to enter its second phase. The biggest challenges to making the vision a reality lie in the green transition. The Session will debate how best the Nordic Region can achieve its goals. The Nordic Council of Ministers will draw up new action plans in 2024.

Young people’s participation is important

Young people’s participation in democracy is a topic to which the Nordic Council has been paying considerable attention for a long time and one on which it has worked closely with the Nordic Youth Council. Last year, the Nordic Youth Council was granted the right to attend and speak at all Nordic Council meetings. Further initiatives to involve young people in democratic decision-making will be debated at the Session.

The award ceremony for the Nordic Council prizes

The Nordic Council will award its five prizes at a ceremony in the Opera House in Oslo on Tuesday 31 October. The prizes are the Literature Prize, the Children and Young People’s Literature Prize, the Music Prize, the Film Prize, and the Environment Prize.

The award ceremony will be streamed live on norden.org and on the NRK website.

The plenary debates will be streamed live stream on norden.org
