Clean-up events, education, training and combatting plastic waste at sea.

A clean marine environment is incredibly important for Iceland. The Icelandic Environment Association and the Blue Army ran a highly visible and successful national campaign to “Keep Iceland Clean". The aim was to highlight and combat plastic pollution in the oceans. The campaign organised more than a hundred major beach-cleaning operations and, no less important, ran projects on the prevention of waste for public agencies, businesses and schools.

"Keep Iceland Clean” forged a strong partnership between the Icelandic Environment Association and the Blue Army. Thanks to the burning commitment of Tómas Knutsson, the Blue Army has become a trailblazer in cleaning up beaches, both above and below the surface of the water. The Icelandic Environment Association has acted as a watchdog for nature in Iceland for more than half a century. Its work fits with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.1.
