Nordic Council cancels Helsinki Theme Session

“The decision to cancel the theme session is completely in lines with the measures national authorities have taken to halt the spread of the corona virus. The Nordic Council supports those national decisions and has decided to cancel its meetings in Helsinki,” says the President of the Nordic Council, Silja Dögg Gunnarsdóttir.

One of the events planned at the theme session was a debate on how the Nordic countries can protect democracy from disinformation and fake news.

The meetings of the Presidium and committees in Helsinki have also been cancelled. Agenda items that can be dealt with online or in other ways will be dealt with accordingly.

The theme session is one of the Nordic Council's five annual meetings. It is attended by the 87 members of the Nordic Council from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland, as well as a large number of civil servants and invited guests.

This year's theme session was due to have been held in the Finnish Parliament in Helsinki.
