At the Session of the Nordic Youth Council in Reykjavik from 25 to 27 October, Alexander Winge from Sweden was elected the new president of the Nordic Youth Council. Winge represents the Nordic Social Democratic Youth Association in the Nordic Youth Council and was co-opted as a member of its presidium in 2024. He is studying to be a teacher and is also an active local politician.

“The Nordic Youth Council will become an independent organisation in 2025, which means that we’ve an important year ahead of us in establishing a stable structure for an organisation that is sustainable and works well for years to come. At the same time, we must step up our political relevance and continue to be a strong voice for young people throughout the Nordics,” says Winge.

The Nordic Youth Council’s main task is to influence the work of the Nordic Council. Winge has the following message for the members of the Nordic Council:

“Have the courage to listen to us young people and make the decisions that are needed. We’re the ones who’ll have to live with the long-term consequences. Short-term thinking simply isn’t an option. I’m looking forward to positive co-operation in the year to come.”

Although Winge will take office as president in January 2025, he will use the coming months to prepare for his new role.
