The agenda for the recent meeting in Helsinki of the Nordic Committee for Children and Young People (NORDBUK) included discussions about the Nordic Baltic Youth Summit 2025, opportunities for young people to get involved in local youth councils and in the running of the '0-30 programme', and school choice in the Nordic Region.

Nordic co-operation prioritises the rights and well-being of children and young people.

NORDBUK is the Nordic Council of Ministers’ advisory and coordinating body on general issues relating to children and young people. Its remit includes:

  • Collecting and disseminating knowledge about the living conditions of children and young people in the Nordic Region.

  • Encouraging the integration of a children’s rights and youth perspective into the work of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

  • Helping children and young people organise and participate in democratic processes.

The NORDBUK meeting discussed the Nordic Baltic Youth Summit 2025, opportunities to get involved in local youth councils, school choice in the Nordic Region and the Open Call* for the composition of the board of the ‘Norden 0-30’ programme.

The committee also visited Aseman Lapset/Walkers, an NGO working with vulnerable young people in Helsinki and took part in the Nordic Welfare Centre’s conference on the rights of children and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It rounded off the visit to Helsinki with an exclusive meeting with the Nordic children’s ombudsmen.

*What is an open call? An open call is like an open invitation. It will provide young people with the opportunity to sit on the board that decides which projects the ‘Norden 0-30’ programme will fund. Further info to follow after the summer.

NVC = abbreviation for the Nordic Welfare Centre
