Although the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled climate negotiations, work hasn’t stopped. At the CHOOSING GREEN debate on 17 November 2020, Nordic political co-operation will join forces to brainstorm ideas for next year’s climate negotiations. We’ll talk about climate action, competitiveness, education, and socially sustainable change with some of the most talented people in the Nordic Region. What’s more, you can join us as we broadcast live throughout the day.

The CHOOSING GREEN debate will address some of the most important and most complex key areas relating to the global green transition. What can we in the Nordic Region contribute? And is that enough?

Over three two-hour sessions, we’ll discuss at length three different perspectives on the green transition. Keynotes and panel debates will discuss the role of the Nordic Region in international climate efforts, the challenges of facilitating a socially sustainable green transition, the impact on our competitiveness, and the changes that are needed in our education systems. How do we equip ourselves for a more sustainable future?

The panels will include young climate activists, politicians, and leaders from social organisations and industry. Participants will include:

  • UN Secretary General, António Guterres
  • Feminist debater and advisor to Oxfam IBIS, Emma Holten
  • Secretary General of Save the Children Sweden, Helena Thybell
  • Deputy Director of the Confederation of Danish Industry, Anne Højer Simonsen
  • Director for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs at the OECD, Stefano Scarpetta
  • Climate activist, Amos Wallgren
  • Secretary General of the Norwegian Red Cross, Bernt G. Apeland.

Climate change is the absolute greatest threat to children’s rights and we risk undoing decades of hard-won progress. The international community and world leaders need to put the rights of children and other vulnerable groups at the heart of climate policy and action.

Helena Thybell, Secretary General of Save the Children Sweden

The event is divided into three sessions, each with its own focus on the green transition:

10:00 to 12:00 (GMT+1): A GREEN NORDIC REGION: How far have we come?

13:00 to 15:00 (GMT+1): THE GREEN TRANSITION: Consequences for Nordic jobs and skills?

16:00 to 18:00 (GMT+1): BRAVE NEW SUSTAINABLE WORLD: The Nordic model under pressure?

Joint the debate

What are the most pressing climate issues? There will be an opportunity at CHOOSING GREEN to ask questions after all the debates. So come up with the questions that are most important to you and let’s have a really good debate on 17 November. Please note that this event will be held in English.

Choosing Green is an international full-day event organised by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The event will take place on Tuesday 17 November from 10:00 to 18:00 (GMT+1) and will be streamed live at and on Facebook.
