Personal identity code in Åland
A personal identity code is needed for identification in government systems and for purposes such as payroll processing and applying for benefits. Population matters in Åland, such as applications for a Finnish personal identity code and registration in the population register, are handled by the Local Register Office at the State Department of Åland.

Apply for a personal identity code
If you move to Åland permanently from a Nordic country, a Finnish personal identity code and population registration are granted after the move has been notified to the Local Register Office at the State Department of Åland in Mariehamn. This notification is done in person, and a valid form of identification must be presented. Non-Nordic citizens must have a certificate of right of residence for EU citizens, a residence permit card, or other proof of legal residence in Finland in order to apply for a personal identity code. Personal identity code for work or study
For temporary stays of less than one year, a valid reason is required to obtain a personal identity code; a valid reason could be, for example, work or study. Applications for a tax-related personal identity code are submitted to the Tax Administration, and an in-person appointment must be scheduled with the Åland Tax Office.
