With four events, Nordic co-operation has a strong presence during Climate Week in New York. As a backdrop, we have UNGA 78, the UN Secretary General’s SDG Summit, and the Climate Ambition Summit.

Efforts to secure a global agreement on plastics, a Nordic stocktake of our climate policy and sectoral restructuring, and the importance of the global biodiversity agreement for the private business community are among the topics that Nordic co-operation is taking to the UN’s 78th General Assembly and Climate Week in New York. Climate Week NYC is now in its 15th year and plays host to more than 400 events.

Find out more about our events and how to take part below.

19 September: Plastic waste must be a thing of the past

The Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment is presenting a new report that shows the way to achieve a substantial reduction in global plastic waste by 2040. The report Towards Ending Plastic Pollution by 2040 – 15 Global Policy Interventions for Systems Change has been drafted by Systemiq and will be published on 19 September. The launch will be followed by a high-level panel discussion and a roundtable discussion with global experts in the field of plastics.

The report is the latest in a series of analyses from Nordic co-operation, which support international efforts to secure a legally binding global agreement on plastics.

19 September: The road to a climate-neutral Nordic society

At the UN’s climate negotiations at COP28, the world will, for the first time, evaluate global efforts to achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The event “From Nordic to Global Stocktakes and Visions” during Climate Week NYC will show how far the Nordics have come in their efforts to become climate-neutral societies. Based on the preliminary results from the project Nordic Stocktakes and Visions, politicians and leaders from the private sector will come together to discuss Nordic and global visions, challenges, and solutions on the road to climate neutrality.

Nordic Stocktake and Visions will be presented as part of the Danish Consulate General’s Sustainability Summit NYC.

Nordic UN Global Compact Networks launch report on 18 and 20 September

The Nordic UN Global Compact Networks from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden will hold a total of four panel debates during Climate Week NYC. All the debates are based on the report “The path towards 2030: where are the Nordics”, which will also be published on 18 September. The report identifies and examines challenges, needs, and opportunities for Nordic companies leading up to 2030.

What’s the situation with sustainability in the private sector in the Nordic Region?
On 18 September, you can listen to two panel debates with representatives from organisations such as Microsoft Sweden, Volvo Group, A.P. Moller Maersk, and Aker Asa.

COP15 and its significance for Nordic companies
On 20 September, there will be a discussion on the implications and opportunities that Nordic companies face following the signing of the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in December 2022.

How can companies be an asset for political decision-makers, and how can political decision-makers encourage companies to take effective measures for nature?
