On 19 May, the Nordic Council of Ministers and Denmark will host this year’s IDAHOT+ Forum in Copenhagen. IDAHOT (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Biphobia, and Intersexphobia) is an international day of observance aimed at raising awareness of LGBTI rights worldwide.

This year’s IDAHOT+ Forum in Copenhagen will place particular emphasis on the rule of law, inclusion, and the protection of LGBTI people, as well as how European countries can work together to combat discrimination and hate crime. The forum forms part of Denmark’s presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers and is being organised in co-operation with, among others, the Council of Europe.

Nordics put LGBTI rights on the international agenda

The Nordic Council of Ministers is participating in this year’s IDAHOT+ Forum, including through the gender equality ministers’ Pushing for Progress initiative, a joint Nordic declaration aimed at strengthening efforts on gender equality, LGBTI rights, and inclusion both across the Nordic Region and internationally.

Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Karen Ellemann, underlined the importance of Nordic co-operation at a time when democracy and human rights are under pressure in several parts of Europe.

“The IDAHOT+ Forum demonstrates how important it is that we stand united in defending and strengthening the rights of LGBTI people. Through Pushing for Progress, the Nordic ministers for gender equality have committed themselves to being a clear voice for gender equality, democracy, and human rights – both in the Nordic Region and across the rest of the world,” said Ellemann.

Important to stand firm in our values

Iceland’s Minister of Industries, Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, who will be taking part in the forum, noted that it comes at a critical time.

“The forum is a reminder that gender equality and freedom can never be taken for granted. We must remain committed to our values and strengthen co-operation across borders. Pushing for Progress provides us with a strong foundation for promoting gender equality, safety, and equal rights and opportunities for everyone,” said Friðriksson.

Goal of a shared declaration

During the IDAHOT+ Forum 2026, participants will discuss a range of key issues affecting the lives of LGBTI people in Europe. These include international co-operation on rights, the situation of LGBTI people in rural areas, protection from violence and coercive control, digital challenges and opportunities, and how education and the labour market can be made more inclusive. Recognition of intersex people will also be on the agenda.

In connection with the forum, a joint European declaration will be signed with the aim of strengthening co-operation and contributing to greater protection and inclusion for LGBTI people across Europe.

About IDAHOT+

IDAHOT Day itself is observed on 17 May, marking the date in 1990 when the WHO ceased classifying homosexuality as a mental illness.

The annual IDAHOT+ conference aims to strengthen co-operation and understanding around LGBTI policy between European governments, international intergovernmental organisations, international civil society organisations, businesses, academia, and other key stakeholders.
