Thank you, Mr. President, members.

The Scottish Parliament has enjoyed engagement with the Nordic Council at official level for a year or two, but this is the first time we've attended the Nordic Council session. I and my colleagues Clare Adamson and Sue Webber, committee conveners from the Scottish Parliament, are extremely grateful for your kind invite. It's a real privilege, and it's giving us a unique insight into the Council, your important work and your clear and heartening commitment to collaboration.

Nordic nations, of course, have played a significant role in Scotland's history. Old Norse language is still evident in Scotland's place and family names. And have you heard of Up Helly Aa, which takes place in Shetland? Scotland has much in common with you. We’re your neighbours. Indeed, parts of Scotland are as close to Norway as they are to other parts of the UK.

There is such potential for the Scottish Parliament, the Nordic Council and parliaments within the region to work together. There is much that we can learn from one another. Strong relationships promote understanding. They enable us to better jointly address challenges.

The Scottish Parliament is resolute in its support for the people of Ukraine, as well as our horror at the humanitarian impact. The war makes it ever more urgent that we respond to the energy crisis in a way that provides real security for a genuinely sustainable future. True security can't be delivered unless we work together to address the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. These crises know no boundaries. I co-chaired an event at COP26 with the then Council Vice President, Annette Lind. The more we collaborate, the better.

To optimally scrutinize governments, parliaments need to be diverse and truly reflective of all the people they represent. One of my priorities is to ensure that we continue to progress the good work that we've made in this area, and that we remove all barriers to genuine political participation.

The establishment of our still relatively young parliament drew on the example of Nordic parliaments. I look forward to continuing to grow together and to welcoming you to Edinburgh. Thank you.

Skottlands parlament har samverkat med Nordiska rådet på officiell nivå under ett eller två år, men det här är första gången som vi närvarar vid Nordiska rådets session. Jag och mina kollegor Clare Adamson och Sue Webber, sammankallande för utskott vid Skottlands parlament, är oerhört tacksamma för er vänliga inbjudan. Det är ett privilegium och det ger oss en unik inblick i rådet, ert viktiga arbete och ert uppenbara och inspirerande engagemang för samarbete.

De nordiska länderna har naturligtvis spelat en viktig roll i Skottlands historia. Det fornnordiska språket lever fortfarande kvar i ort- och släktnamn i Skottland. Och har ni hört talas om Up Helly Aa, som äger rum på Shetland? Skottland har mycket gemensamt med er. Vi är era grannar. Delar av Skottland har faktiskt lika nära till Norge som till andra delar av Förenade kungariket.

Det finns en stor samarbetspotential för Skottlands parlament, Nordiska rådet och parlamenten i regionen. Det finns mycket vi kan lära av varandra. Starka relationer främjar förståelse. Tack vare dem kan vi bättre anta utmaningar tillsammans.

Skottlands parlament står fast vid sitt stöd till det ukrainska folket och vår bestörtning över de humanitära följderna. Kriget gör det ännu mer angeläget att reagera på energikrisen på ett sätt som skapar verklig säkerhet för en genuint hållbar framtid. Vi kan inte uppnå sann säkerhet om vi inte samarbetar för att hantera de kriser som förlusten av biologisk mångfald och klimatförändringarna utgör. Dessa kriser känner inga gränser. Jag delade ordförandeskapet för ett evenemang vid COP26 med rådets dåvarande vice ordförande, Annette Lind. Ju mer vi samarbetar, desto bättre.

Parlamenten måste på ett mångsidigt sätt återspegla alla de människor de företräder för att på bästa möjliga sätt kunna granska regeringarnas arbete. En av mina prioriteringar är att se till att vi fortsätter med det goda arbete som vi har utfört på detta område och att vi undanröjer alla hinder för ett verkligt politiskt deltagande.

De nordiska parlamenten var en av förebilderna då vårt relativt unga parlament inrättades. Jag ser fram emot ett allt närmare samarbete och mot att välkomna er till Edinburgh. Tack.
