Nordics join forces at UN Ocean Conference to promote sustainable aquatic food systems
Under the heading "Advancing aquatic food systems for ocean and human health", the commitment emphasises the importance of preserving oceans as both ecosystems and sustainable sources of nutritious food. The Nordics want to demonstrate leadership in the global transition towards a more sustainable food system.
“I welcome the Nordic commitment to the UN Ocean Conference. Stronger co-operation and innovation are vital in order to protect our oceans and ensure sustainable aquatic food systems. We're looking forward to taking part in this important work,” says Norway's Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, and member of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Fisheries, Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Marianne Sivertsen Næss.
Ocean-based food for people and planet
The commitment rests on a cornerstone of Nordic co-operation – the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023. The recommendations form the scientific basis for food-based dietary guidelines in the Nordic and Baltic countries, and also serve as a knowledge resource used by many countries worldwide. Furthermore, they serve as the leading global scientific evidence for healthy and sustainable nutrition. One of the nutrition recommendations is to consume more aquatic foods from sustainable stocks, for the benefit of both our own health and the health of the planet.
Aquatic foods such as fish and shellfish are nutritious, have a lower carbon footprint than many land-based foods, and can play an important role in the sustainable diet of the future. With well-managed fisheries and responsible aquaculture, oceans can help meet the growing global demand for food without jeopardising ecosystems.
“We need to use our knowledge to develop marine resources in a sustainable way. The Nordics have a responsibility to lead the way, and we will contribute with both research and co-operation to ensure that the oceans remain a source of food, jobs, and viable local communities,” says Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Emphasis on co-operation and knowledge-sharing
The Nordic countries emphasise the importance of multilateral co-operation to address the challenges facing the oceans. Through collaborative research, innovation, and international partnerships, the aim is to promote sustainable aquatic food systems both regionally and globally.
