About the Vice-President of the Nordic Council

The Vice-President of the Nordic Council is elected for one calendar year and comes from the same country as the President.

The Vice-President is elected at the autumn Session of the Council and is a member from the country that will host the next autumn Session.

The Presidency, like the host country for the sessions, alternates between the countries in accordance with an agreed rota which starts with Denmark, followed by Finland, Norway, Sweden and Iceland.

In the absence of the President, the Vice-President chairs meetings of the Presidium, assumes responsibility for the Presidency, prepares meetings of the Presidium and other Nordic Council bodies, including the agenda, which is drawn up in conjunction with the Secretary General.

The Vice-President helps the President out with contact with the national parliaments, the devolved parliaments and relevant international organisations and shares in official duties representing the Nordic Council.
