Lars Tysklind, chair of the Nordic Council Committee for a Sustainable Nordic Region, stresses that the world needs an ambitious deal to take shape in the International Maritime Organisation this Friday. Earlier this week, the Nordic Council urged the Nordic governments to join forces in the IMO to support the goals of the Paris Agreement.

International shipping and aviation are not directly covered by the 2015 Paris climate pact, which is based on national efforts. However, these sectors' greenhouse gas emissions contribute to global warming, and must in due course be included in the global effort to hold the temperature rise “well below 2 degrees”.

Currently the International Maritime Organisations (IMO), is negotiating a plan to could stop the rise in emissions for international shipping and put the sector on a path towards reduced emissions.

On 10 April 2018 the Nordic Council (the parliamentary assembly of the Nordic countries) adopted a resolution at its session in Akureyri, Iceland, recommending the Nordic governments to joint forces within the IMO. This would support the adoption of a regime that can set the shipping sector on the path outlined in the Paris Agreement.

Lars Tysklind, chair of the Nordic Council Committee for a Sustainable Nordic Region, stresses that the world needs an ambitious deal this week in the IMO; a deal that supports the Paris Agreement.

- I therefore encourage the Nordic countries to do their utmost to push climate action forward under the International Maritime Organization. We need to see the shipping sector slash emissions to close zero by 2050. With global agreement on such a goal the technical solution will in due course be developed, says Tysklind.
