The free movement of persons between the Nordic countries is an important part of common identity and strengthens the Nordic societies. It has been an integral part of Nordic Cooperation since the 1950´s.
Since the obstacles to free movement are already identified, listed and prioritized, the goal of this statistical account is to describe the amount of people possibly being affected by obstacles to the freedom of movement in the Nordic countries through statistics.
Statistics describing the mobility
Nordic Mobility statistics are primarily aimed at authorities engaged in the process of increasing freedom of movement across borders and of removing the obstacles hindering mobility.
The aim of the project is to produce and publish statistics describing the mobility of people and the social benefits paid across the Nordic borders. The first results are expected early summer, and will describe student mobility.
Statistics in selected statistical areas will be produced and published in an appropriate database or likewise site. In addition, the project will look into the possibility of producing statistics describing the mobility aspects of businesses.
A collaborative Nordic effort
The project will benefit all actors interested in cross-border statistics, and will be documenting the possibilities of using register data and the methods for producing data along the way. Nordic Mobility is coordinated by Statistics Finland and executed as a joint operation by the national statistical institutes (NSI) in the Nordic countries.
