Student Skills

12.05.20 | Statistik
In the Nordic countries we aim to develop both basic skills as well as competencies for the future to promote a green, competitive and socially sustainable Nordic region. The OECD’s PISA test shows the cognitive skills in reading, mathematics and science at age 15. Compared to the OECD-average over time, the Nordic countries perform better on average in both reading, mathematics and science.

Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)

This indicator shows students’ mean score in the PISA test in the Nordic region. PISA assesses the levels of knowledge and skills attained by 15-year-olds.

Compared to the OECD-average over time, the Nordic countries perform better on average in both reading, mathematics and science.

Finland is still a top performer, but the results are declining. Opposite to the Faroe Islands who is in the bottom of the specter, but with significant improvements over the years.

Reading

With the Nordic average being an entire 19 points above the OECD average, Reading remains the strongest discipline among the three assessed disciplines in the PISA. As can be seen from the below line chart, Sweden is now the second best in reading among the Nordic countries after managing to turn around a decreasing trend in 2012. Despite a slight decrease, Finland continue to have the highest scores among the Nordic countries.

Mathematics

In the latest PISA from 2018, every single Nordic country, including the Faroe Islands, scored higher in mathematics than the OECD average. Additionally, Denmark outperformed Finland for the first time and Iceland managed to increase their scores after some years of declining results.

Science

When looking at science, you can see the progress of the Faroe Islands as they have seen improved results on every assessment and are catching up to their Nordic neighbors. Just as in the other disciplines, the Nordic average eclipses the OECD average with only Iceland and the Faroe Islands lying under the OECD average. Finland is still in the lead, but its Nordic neighbors are closing the gap compared to previous years.

School Environment

In general, the Nordic pupils consider the school environment to be more collaborative than competitive in the PISA 2018 results. There is a positive correlation between reading score and student collaboration, and a negative correlation between reading score and student competition.
