Nordic stakeholder webinar on a global plastics treaty

The Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, would like to invite all Nordic stakeholders to a webinar on the ongoing negotiations for a global agreement to end plastic pollution by 2040. The webinar will have speakers from government, scientific community, civil society and the business sector.

This event provides opportunities for stakeholders in the Nordic countries to learn about the international negotiations and Nordic priorities and discuss possible options for core obligations and control measures in the plastics treaty. It also provides the opportunity for stakeholder engagement across sectors and countries committed to end plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution constitutes a planetary crisis with impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, the climate and human health. Without new and effective control measures, plastic production is set to double in 20 years and plastic waste leaking into the ocean is projected to triple by 2040. On 3 November 2021 the Nordic Ministers for Environment and Climate committed to developing a new global agreement to combat plastic pollution, taking a comprehensive approach to plastics across the entire life-cycle.

On 3 May 2022 the ministers called for Nordic leadership and a high level of ambition in the negotiations on a global agreement to combat plastic pollution. As members of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, the Nordic countries are part of a likeminded group of countries committed to end plastic pollution by 2040.
