Digital Twins are digital copies of real-world phenomena. The NOCOS DT project applies digital twin technology to sea ice research in the Nordic, Arctic and Baltic regions. It ties to the European flagship initiative Destination Earth (DestinE), which aims to create a digital model of the whole world to better understand and adapt to complex phenomena such as climate change.

NOCOS DT helps the Nordic-Baltic region play a key role in the battle against climate change by working alongside Destination Earth's Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT). Climate DT is designed to support climate-related decision-making and to make climate information more democratic and accessible to everybody. NOCOS DT contributes to Climate DT by developing new use cases related to sea ice, an area where the Nordic-Baltic region has strong expertise and interest, and by ensuring that future developments can be integrated into the broader system, benefiting from shared resources and technologies. The tools developed by NOCOS DT are valuable to a variety of impact sectors including coastal engineering, shipping, fishing and tourism, as well as the lives of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic.

Through NOCOS DT, the Nordic-Baltic region is positioned to make a significant contribution to the development of climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions, leveraging its expertise and technological resources to address the challenges posed by a changing climate.
