At Arctic Frontiers 2025, the Nordic Council of Ministers launched its new Arctic Programme 2025-2027, participated in a “Big Picture” session and took part in a handful of side-events and Arctic Frontiers Open events.

Indigenous communities and perspectives are often underrepresented, both within and outside academia. One important way to address this is by encouraging young people to assume leadership roles in research. At this side event, we gathered representatives from institutions across the Arctic region and asked: How can more people from Indigenous backgrounds be recruited into higher education, and what will motivate them to pursue an academic career? How can academic institutions, organisations, and governments work to promote Indigenous leadership in research?

The Nordic Council of Ministers Arctic Programme builds on nearly three decades of Nordic collaboration in promoting stability, growth, innovation, and strong civil societies in the Arctic, emphasizing sustainability across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. As the program enters its 30th year, this event aimed to foster dialogue among Nordic and North American stakeholders to evaluate its three key goals: Social, Economic, and Environmental resilience in the Arctic.

Nordregio: Ecosystem-Based Management from a Pan-Arctic Perspective Part 1

Ecosystem-based management (EBM) supports value creation through the sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystem services, including preserving ecosystem structure, functionality, productivity, and biodiversity. Implementation of EBM shows variable success across sectors, Arctic states and beyond. An urgency for integrated use and synthesis of knowledge, methods and approaches from different scientific disciplines, as well as for integrated cross-sectorial management approaches is needed considering the upcoming 2030 conservation and sustainability goals.

This panel explored the potential for enhanced Nordic cooperation in a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics. Pål Wilter Skedsmo from FNI moderated the discussion, joined by Karen Ellemann (Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers), Maria Varteressian (Deputy Minister at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), and Hans Christian Hveem Kjølseth (Deputy Minister the Norwegian Ministry of Defence).

Nordic Innovation: Marine Multi-Use as a Means to Achieve 30x30

This event explored marine multi-use as a strategic approach to achieving the global target of conserving 30% of the world's oceans by 2030.

We brought together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and NGOs to discuss both the challenges and opportunities of marine multi-use, highlighting its potential to contribute to sustainable ocean conservation.

The session began with an overview of the urgency of ocean conservation, followed by keynote addresses from government and UN representatives on Norway's commitment and global expectations.

Nordic Energy Research: Arctic Hydrogen: Nordic Solutions to Common Challenges

In the tenth Nordic Arctic programme, 30 million Danish Kroner over a period of 3 years, are set to foster social, economic, and environmental resilience.

Nordic Arctic Programme 2025-2027

The Nordic Arctic Programme 2025-2027 aims to support socially, economically, and environmentally resilient Arctic communities. By promoting robust civil societies, sustainable economic growth, and green transitions, the programme aims to supports local initiatives and partnerships that inspire resilience across the Nordic-Arctic region. Through this programme the Nordic Council of Ministers will back innovative Arctic projects aligned with the Nordic Council of Ministers 2030 vision.
