Science tells us that we need to stay below 1,5 degrees in order to prevent the planet from slipping into further climate crisis. That will require immediate and deep emission reductions across all sectors. This project investigates how far the Nordic countries have come in their climate transition and envisages visions of a Nordic climate neutral society.

Informasjon

The world is taking stock of global climate action, and so is the Nordic region. This project is part of the initiative “Climate transition in the Nordics” to support the Nordic Vision 2030 to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. The main takeaways can be found in our Nordic Stocktake and Visions Policy Brief.

The Nordic Stocktake and Visions project will be launched at COP28 in the Nordic Pavilion on the 2nd December 2023 at 17.00 UCT +4.

Learn more about the event at COP28 here.

The project was pre-launched at the Sustainability Summit NYC during New York Climate Week and UNGA 2023.

The project results were presented to the Nordic Council of Ministers for Environment and Climate the 1st November 2023 and is referred to in the Ministerial declaration on COP28.

Nordic pathways to climate neutrality

The Nordic Stocktake and Visions project compile an overview of similarities, diversity and shared elements of the Nordic pathways towards net zero emissions. All Nordic countries have set targets to become climate neutral.

Greenhouse gas emissions in the Nordic countries have been reduced by 26% between 1990 and 2021. However, much still needs to be done in the transition to a fully green energy system and in front of us lie the challenges of making transitions within the sectors of domestic transport, industry as well as agriculture. The report “Nordic Stocktake – Pathways to Climate Neutrality” describe the results of the study in detail, highlights common challenges across the Nordic countries, exemplifies decarbonization technologies pioneered in the Nordics and proposes opportunities for further cross-Nordic collaboration.

Webinars

To share experiences and inspire across boarder, insights from the study were shared at a webinar series with topics of relevance for achieving climate neutrality in the Nordic region.

  • 16 September 2023: Just a carbon pricing policy or a just carbon pricing policy?
  • 29 September 2023: Decarbonizing the Nordic power system – Securing supply and reducing unwanted distributional consequences
  • 2 October 2023: Consumption-based emissions analyses – how and why?
  • 3 October 2023: CCS and CDR in the context of Nordic carbon neutrality

Visions of a climate neutral Nordic

What could a Nordic climate neutral society look like? When reaching out to a diverse group of Nordic thought leaders, asking them to visualize alternative futures, an image of a smarter, healthier and more long-term based society emerges. Find out more in our report “Nordic Visions of Climate Neutrality”.
